At the County Fair, 14x11, Fine Art Print

Few institutions evoke Americana more readily than the county fair. There often is a surreal quality to them, with sideshows, cotton candy, and tractor pulls set against the ordinary rhythms of rural life. I photographed this scene at the Chouteau County Fair in Montana, where prize-winning vegetables were arranged on paper plates atop a multicolored quilt. The vegetables appear to float against the shifting patterns of the background, a visual confusion that turns an expectedly mundane display into a dazzle of ambiguity.
