This photograph shows the Missouri River downstream from Fort Benton. During the town’s 19th‑century heyday, steamboats rounded this bend to disgorge their cargo on the Fort Benton levee. Seventy‑five percent of the freight bound for the northwestern interior of North America passed through this stretch of river. The view shifts constantly with changing light and cloudscapes. Here, on an autumn day, clouds drift overhead like slow galleons, the trees turn to russet and amber, and the river deepens to a quiet blue.
